Taiwan: Shang He Wu
My friend and I had been talking about doing a buffet in Taiwan since we first arrived. Since my sister was leaving soon, we seized the chance to scope out Shang He Wu. We probably picked the worst day to do it though. It was Father's Day and we didn't have a reservation. The line was terrifying:
Luckily, my sister and I got to NEO 19 (the building in which Shang He Wu is located) right when it opened, which was 30 minutes before the actual restaurant opened. We stormed upstairs with the rest of the crowd to put our names on the wait list. We figured, why not? Later we found out that Shang He Wu reserves 50 seats for non-reservations. Score!
Shang He Wu is a buffet of basically everything. There's dim sum, sushi, hot pot, etc. There's even an all-you-can drink alcohol bar. There were so many people that it was hard to take any good photos:
Here's our table after the first round:
I went back repeatedly for the sashimi plate:
And finally dessert:
The neat thing about Shang He Wu is that each table is given a couple of clips with the table number on them. You can drop these clips into various little trays at the buffet counters and have the posted dish made on the spot and brought to your table. The last time I went to Shang He Wu (2 years ago), you could get a whole steamed fish with a clip, among many other choices. Unfortunately, I only found less than 5 options this trip. Perhaps Father's Day is too busy for Shang He Wu to replenish the buffet trays AND serve up the extra dishes...
At 678 NT (around $22) for lunch, it's a bit pricey, but not a bad deal. Definitely come on a day when there's not that many people.
