New York: Nan Xiang Dumpling House

Armed with our pearl tea, we went in search of some soup dumplings.  I'd heard that Nan Xiang Dumpling House had some of the best and judging by the line on a weekday morning, I was inclined to believe it:

Fortunately, we didn't have to wait long before a table for two opened up.  Nothing too special about the decor, but c'mon, we kinda expected that:

We started with a steamer of pork soup dumplings:

And because we felt bad for just ordering the soup dumplings, we added a plate of pan fried pork buns:

The soup dumplings were good, but they paled in comparison to the pan fried pork buns.  The bottoms were crisp, the bun doughy, and the filling meaty:

Not dry at all, as pan fried buns sometimes get.  And no soy sauce necessary.  All the flavor necessary was right there.  (But if you're obsessed with vinegar like I am, a little bit doesn't hurt.)

Chicago is sorely lacking in good Chinese food, so eating at Nan Xiang Dumpling House felt very much like coming across an oasis after wandering the desert for years.  We really need places like this in the Windy City.

Hey Nan Xiang, how about opening a Chicago branch?
