Taiwan: Good Cho's

When I heard about Good Cho's and their Asian take on bagels, I knew I had to check it out.  Located in an artsy park converted from a military veterans' housing complex, it took Jiejie and me a minute to spot its entrance:

The first thing you see when you walk in is, well, the gift store, but after that comes the huge display case of bagels:

You can grab a dozen or so to go, or you can ask to be seated inside for a meal like we did.

We kicked things off with the bagel fries (120 NT / $3.80):

Our choice of dipping sauce included condensed milk with peanut candy, fish roe mayo, and garlic pepper cream cheese.  We went with the fish roe mayo and that turned out to be the best decision we could have made.  The bagel fries themselves were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and piping hot.  But the roe mayo was what sealed the deal.  The lime zest made it super bright and tangy and just utterly delicious.

To get a sample of their bagels, we ordered the daily bagels with spread (120 NT / $3.80):

Our server warned us that the bagels would be randomly selected by the kitchen.  We figured with so many interesting flavors in the display cabinet, we were bound to get a couple good ones.  To our great disappointment, none of the bagels that were brought out were the ones that we were curious about.  No sweet potato with cream cheese, no four season oolong...not even purple potato with osmanthus!  Instead we got black sesame and brown sugar, cream cheese and pepper, wild mulberry, double cheese, and one more that I can't recall.

The most interesting thing we had was the oyster omelet bagel sandwich (260 NT / $8.30):

The bagel itself didn't have much flavor and I've definitely had better oyster omelets at the night market, but the combination of the two was really creative and fun to eat.  It also just looked really cool.

We should've stopped there, but I couldn't resist ordering a poprice brownie (80 NT / $2.55):

We really should've stopped while we were ahead.  The poprice was stale.  Biting into the brownie felt like biting into Styrofoam.  No bueno.

The bagel fries made the entire trip worth it.  If I ever go back to Good Cho's, I would order the bagel fries to go (with fish roe mayo of course) and pick my own damn bagels.
