South Bay: Umai Savory Hot Dogs
My friend PC is a hot dog fanatic, so when Umai opened in our area, we figured we had to check it out:
The place seemed popular, particularly with the young and trendy:
Instead of just ordering two dogs and calling it a day, we decided to dabble in some of Umai's other offerings. We got ten pieces chicken wings ($11.95), which allowed us to pick two flavors. We went with soy glaze:
And sweet chili:
Both were...decent.
We also tacked on an order of chili cheese fries ($4.95). It should have come with seaweed flakes, but because PC doesn't like seaweed, we asked for it to be left out.
I, on the other hand, love seaweed, so I ordered the Tokyo signature ($6.95):
This all beef dog came smothered in caramelized onions, roasted seaweed, terimayo, Umai's teriyaki sauce, and white sesame seeds.
PC went with the Honolulu Bang Bang ($6,95):
Instead of a beef dog, it was a polish sausage covered in pineapple bits, red onions, bacon bits, and teriyaki hoisin sauce.
Honestly, neither of us were too impressed by Umai. My hot dog, while photogenic, just had too much sauce on it. Every bite felt like a bite of salty mayo.
I can see why Umai would be popular with Instagrammers, but it's just not for me. Maybe I'm just not hip enough to see the appeal.
