Taiwan: Chen San Ding
Brown sugar boba milk might be all the rage these days, but it's been around for a long time now. If you're looking for the OG brown sugar boba milk, you have to head to Chen San Ding:
Unlike the Yifangs and Tiger Sugars of the world, there's only one Chen San Ding. You won't find any fancy marketing or modern decor here, just good old brown sugar boba milk (40 NT / $1.30):
Te milk is creamy and oh-so-delicious mixed with the brown sugar syrup. The boba itself doesn't get much better in terms of chewiness and flavor. There's an option to adjust the ice level, but you really want to keep the ice since the boba comes directly from a bubbling vat. Unless warm milk is your thing, then by all means, you do you boo.
And if you're lactose intolerant (which according to Jiejie is an Asian American thing, not a Taiwanese thing), there are other options for you, such as brown sugar boba with lemon and brown sugar boba with grass jelly. Everything costs only 40 NT.
We introduced T, CV, and CL to Chen San Ding when they arrived in Taipei. They loved it so much that they had it almost every day they were there. (Chen San Ding is closed on Mondays, alas.) Not sure if it was a blessing or a curse that their Airbnb was essentially just around the corner and down the street.
