New York: Breads Bakery
On our last day in New York, we wanted to pick up some goodies to take home. CK's next baking project was the babka, so we figured we should get her a model one to try. An Internet search for the best babka in NYC led us to this kiosk in Bryant Park:
Breads Bakery is known for its chocolate babka ($5 for a slice and $14.99 for a whole loaf):
We ended up buying two loaves, one for CK and one for our parents. We immediately sliced into the one for our parents and each ate a slice right there in the park.
I can't say that I've had many babkas in the life, but the Breads babka was definitely the flakiest one I've ever had. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, it was almost a cross between a kouign amann and a soft bread laced with with ribbons of dark chocolate.
I liked it. A lot.
Not the cheapest bakery around, but that's NYC for ya. I wouldn't make a habit of going there, but it makes for a good souvenir!
After killing some time playing Pokemon Go in the park, we then went to Xi'an Famous Food for some noodles and then Coco for some pearl tea before we had to meet up with T and CV in order to head to the airport.
And that, my friends, concluded our impromptu spring trip to the Big Apple.
