Cambodia: Golden Bananas

The morning of our third day in Siem Reap, Vhet took us deep into the mountains of ex-Khmer Rouge territory.  We saw the reclining Buddha at Phnom Kulen, gawked over the River of a Thousand Lingas, then almost died on the rickety stairs down to the base of its waterfall.

All along the mountain road were banana stands such as this one:

We stopped at one on the way down the mountain.  How could we not?  I just had to check out the red and deep purple bananas up close.

The golden bananas from that area are apparently famous.  Vhet told us that his co-workers asked him to bring back some bananas for them.  He helped us haggle for 3 bunches of golden banana.  We asked him about the red and purple ones, but he didn't seem as enthusiastic about those, so we stuck with the golden ones.

We gave one bunch to Vhet, one bunch to our driver, and kept the last one for ourselves.  One bunch of bananas may not sound like much, but trust me, that bunch was HUMONGOUS.  I was a little worried about how the two of us were going to finish all the bananas, but my fears were quickly put to rest when CK ate 5 before we even got off the mountain.

She's a beast when it comes to fruit.
