Oakland: Souley Vegan
There are only a few people I would voluntarily enter a vegan restaurant for. SY is one of them. I just can't say no to her.
Which is how I ended up at Souley Vegan after work one day:
After placing our order at the podium, we walked into the back room for a table:
My expectations weren't really high to begin with, being a veggie hater and all. So I wasn't too let down when the food wasn't all that great. SY, on the other hand, was a bit more surprised by the disappointment.
We shared the spaghetti with crushed falafel:
It wouldn't have been too bad if it had just a bit more salt. The sauce came out rather bland and uninteresting.
I was actually kind of looking forward to the fried okra:
The breading on the okra was just...strange. SY and I couldn't exactly pin down what was off about it, but I guess I would say that it was really hard in an unpleasant way. The okra itself wasn't seasoned either.
In conclusion, I won't be back. Which is too bad, because some of the dishes on the menu actually sounded kind of interesting. While I'm an unabashed carnivore, I honestly have nothing against veggies...unless they're flavorless. That's just unforgivable.
