South Bay: Beijing Restaurant

CK's parents came to visit from Chicago early in March.  One of the places CK thought they would enjoy was Beijing Restaurant:

She was nice enough to let me tag along.

It was a Saturday night, so we weren't surprised to find the place packed:

No Korean-style Chinese restaurant is complete without kimchi and pickled daikon of the neon yellow variety:

When it comes to Korean-style Chinese cuisine, there are three iconic dishes.  First there's jjamppong ($11.95), which is a spicy seafood noodle soup:

And of course there's jjajangmyeon, which is probably most well known.  Beijing Restaurant offers both traditional jjajangmyeon and a more nontraditional seafood kind.  CK ordered a large plate of the seafood jjajangmyeon ($19.95):

Last, but not least, is sweet and sour beef ($15.95):

The sweet and sour sauce came on the side to prevent premature sogginess.

My favorite part of the meal was actually the complimentary honeyed sweet potatoes that came at the end:

Everything we had that night was solid and got the stamp of approval from CK's parents.  Personally, I like Tong Soon Garden more.  Beijing Restaurant might be more hip with its flat screen TVs and trendy decor, but I prefer the old school feel of Tong Soon.

I also like how every bite of sweet and sour beef at Tong Soon comes with the risk of inhaling vinegar fumes.  I like living on the edge like that.

CK, on the other hand, really likes the seafood jjajangmeyon at Beijing Restaurant.  Oh well.  To each their own, I suppose.
