San Francisco: Yifang Taiwan Fruit Tea

There was a bunch of hoopla about Yifang Taiwan Fruit Tea online, particularly about their brown sugar pearls, which made Abby and I a bit curious.  We happened to be at Marugame Udon for a late lunch one day, so we popped inside Stonestown Galleria Shopping Center to check out the Yifang kiosk there:

We were not at all surprised to see a line.

Apparently, the Yifang in San Francisco has a brown sugar pearl release schedule.  If you want pearls, you better show up right around the time they are ready or you're going to be out of luck.  Like us.

With no pearls available for another hour and a half, we ordered Yifang's signature fruit teas instead.  There was the pineapple green tea ($4.50 for a medium) and the Yifang fruit tea ($5 for a medium):

If you've ever had a Taiwanese pineapple cake, the pineapple green tea tastes kind of like that.  It's not made with fresh pineapple, but with a kind of pineapple jam.  I'm not a huge fan of that kind of pineapple flavor, but Abby liked it.

The Yifang fruit tea is mountain tea infused with passionfruit and pineapple with sliced fruit like apples and oranges inside.  30% sweetness is recommended, so that's what I went with.  It was refreshing, I'll give it that.  But I'm not sure it's worth $5.  You know what I mean?  Why is pearl tea so expensive these days?!

Anyway, if you want to get your hands on the elusive brown sugar pearl latte or brown sugar pearl black tea latte, make sure to plan your trip according to Yifang's schedule.  From Monday to Saturday, pearls are made at 11 am, 2 pm, 5 pm, and 7:30 pm.  On Sundays, they're served from 12 pm to 5 pm until they run out.

Who knew it would be so difficult to get a pearl tea?
