San Diego: Mariscos El Pulpo
We trusted CL, however, so we sat down to enjoy our complimentary chips:
There were a lot of interesting tacos on the menu, but CL told us to focus on the octopus ones, so that's what we did. We got the pulpo chicharron ($5.50):
Pulpo. Chicharron. Let me just say it again. CHICHARRON. The octopus was sauteed in garlic butter sauce and mixed with serrano slices and chicharron.
We also got the pulpo ajillo ($5.50):
The octopus came sauteed in garlic and ajillo chile butter.
The last pulpo taco we got was the mojo de ajo octopus ($5.50), which was simply sauteed octopus with garlic butter:
We meant to focus on the taco section, but our eyes couldn't help but be drawn to the El Pulpo molcajete ($33). I mean, just look at this boiling beast:
This bubbling cauldron was filled to the brim with grilled fish, manila clams, green mussels, octopus, jumbo shrimp, and panela cheese. There was an option to add grilled NY steak. Our server didn't ask us whether we wanted it and just assumed that we did. We were slightly annoyed by that as we could have done without (it didn't really add much and those four dinky slices were certainly not worth an additional six bucks), but oh, well.
The molcajete was served with rice, beans, and tortillas:
The molcajete was delicious and I'm glad we ordered it, but honestly, if I ever went back again, I would stick to the tacos. Because those pulpo tacos were phenomenal. I thought I would love the chicharron one the most (chicharron!), but surprisingly, I enjoyed the other two more.
Yes, $5.50 is damn expensive for a taco. It says a lot that a cheapskate like me would be willing to fork over that money. Not only willing, but eager.
EAGER, I tell you.
The tacos were so good that we actually felt a bit guilty for going without Abby. Only a bit though. It wasn't our fault she had an interview that day.
Heh. Adulting sucks.
