South Bay: King Wah Restaurant
My parents now have a new go-to dim sum place in the South Bay:
King Wah Restaurant is in Milpitas, which is super close to where I live. It gets pretty packed on weekends during dim sum hours, so the key is to get there early. When my parents and I arrived around 11:00, we were seated immediately:
But a little after that, the little waiting area will filled with people and others stood outside.
Dim sum at King Wah is served cart style. You wait for the carts (or servers with trays) to circle around to your table and then pick what you want.
As usual with dim sum posts, this is going to be more like a photo dump. Yea, I'm sure you're all heartbroken by that.
Anyway, here we go!
Steamed dumpling pic number one:
I've never actually had this type of dumpling anywhere else. The filling is wet instead of the solid ground pork mass that you usually find. There's peanuts and who knows what else in there. I didn't bother trying to figure it out. Gotta eat it while it's hot!
Shrimp dumplings:
Phoenix claws:
Rice noodle with shrimp:
Pan fried chive dumplings:
Bean curd skin rolls for my mother:
Turnip cake:
And to try something new, we got this fish cake coated in sliced almonds:
And of course, the xian shui jiao (fried dumpling):
Nothing too out of the ordinary, but the dim sum is solid.
What stood out the most to me, however, was not the food, but the service. Service at typical dim sum places (heck, typical Chinese places period) tends to be on the brusque side. Not at King Wah though. Everyone we talked to from the hostess to the cart ladies to the floor managers to the busboys were super friendly (and efficient).
Cart ladies in particular are known for being impatient and oftentimes downright rude. The cart ladies at King Wah smiled and joked with us. That's right. JOKED WITH US. They patiently waited for us to peruse their offerings and make up our minds. When we turned them away without ordering anything off their cart, they didn't huff or angrily stomp away. When we ordered something directly instead of waiting for the cart to come around, they brought it to us quickly.
I've only eaten dim sum at King Wah, so I can't speak for their dinner service, but I would definitely go back again and again. The place is clean, the food is good, and the service is almost peculiarly nice. Ignore the mediocre reviews on Yelp and go give it a try.
