Greece: Spitiki Gefsi

Our Meteora tour meeting time was 9:00am, but we left our Airbnb much earlier in order to have enough time to make a stop at Spitiki Gefsi for breakfast:

Even though Spitiki Gefsi was already open, they hadn't quite filled up their shelves with goodies yet:

That didn't bother us at all because they had what we went for:

Spanakopita (2.20€) or spinach pie.  I don't know if Spitiki Gefsi has the best spanakopita in Kalambaka, but it was definitely the best one I had all trip.  Maybe it was because we enjoyed it while it was still piping hot.  The fillo crust was delicately crisp and flaky, while the filling was the most well seasoned from all the spanakopitas I tried in Greece.

The tiropita (2.20€) or cheese pie, on the other hand, was delicious the first few bites, but quickly got a bit too much for me:

My sister felt the exact opposite, preferring the cheese over the spinach.  To each his own, I suppose.

We took the pies to-go and enjoyed them while sitting in the Visit Metero Travel office.  Though there were four of us and only two slices of pie, we still had trouble finishing everything.  It's definitely not a light breakfast item.

A bit off the beaten path, I highly recommend taking the time to check out Spitiki Gefsi.  We tried to go back the next morning before catching our train, but it was way too early and they were not yet open.  So tragic!
