Greece: Taverna Panellinion

The first thing we did after our Meteora tour was to go on a hunt for lunch.  Of course I had a list of restaurants and of course most of them were closed.

Damn low season.

One restaurant on my list was open though.  It also happened to be the restaurant recommended by our Airbnb host.  Thank goodness for Taverna Panellinion:

We could have sat outside and enjoyed the views of Meteora, but we've never been a family that preferred dining al fresco.  Wind and dust and bugs and all that, ya know?  So we took our business inside instead:

The interior was very cozy in a homey kind of way, with all the kitchenware and black and white photographs lining the walls.

Right off the bat, we noticed that prices in Kalambaka were significantly cheaper than in Santorini.  But bread still cost extra.  0.50€ per person to be exact:

We didn't mind though.  We wanted to bread to go with the tzatziki (3.30€) we ordered:

It was the best tzatziki we had all trip.  Super thick and creamy, the cucumber added the perfect refreshing touch.

Where else in the world can you get a roasted lamb plate for 9.90€?:

One of the daily specials was a pork dish that wasn't on the menu (from deducting the cost of the other dishes from the final bill, I think the pork was around 8€):

And to round out our meal, we got meatballs with tomato sauce (8.80€):

Notice something missing?  Here's a hint: it comes from the ground.

If you said vegetables, you would be correct.  It didn't even occur to us to order something to balance out all the meat.  Potatoes are veggies, right?

Everything was delicious.  The lamb in particular was incredibly tender.  Portion sizes were generous.  Service was great.  And the prices!  So cheap!

Kalamaka is a small town, but even so, you won't miss Taverna Panellinion.  Just head to the center and follow your nose.
