Greece: Nostimo

Cookies were not going to sustain us all the way from Kalambaka to Athens.  Luckily, there was another bakery open at the corner:

Nostimo was a tiny shop with barely and space inside.  There were a couple locals seated at the counter sipping on their coffees, but my sister and I were more interested in the pastry selection in the window.

We had no idea what was what, so we asked the guy manning the cashier for his favorites.  We got the bougatsa or custard pastry, which we gobbled down at the train station while it was still hot:

The ham and cheese pastry was my favorite:

Just look at all those lovely layers:

Even though we saved the savory ones for lunch, the pastry dough retained their flakiness on the outside and their soft butteriness on the inside.  So good.  And also so easy to share thanks to the Nostimo guy and his pizza cutter.

The Nostimo guy said his favorite was the cheese pastry:

A little too rich for me, but I actually enjoyed it more than the one from Spitiki Gefsi as it wasn't nearly as greasy:

The chicken was our pick for our mother:

It was a tad dry, but still quite yummy:

I'm actually glad Spitiki Gefsi was closed that morning.  If it had been open, we would never have discovered Nostimo.  Each pastry was delicious even hours later.  Not only that, they were affordable too at 1.80 to 2€ each.
