Greece: To Trikyklo
Due to a delay in our connecting train, we didn't arrive in Athens until well into the evening. Too tired to venture far for dinner, we took our Airbnb host's recommendation and headed to To Trikyklo one block down:
There was a bit of confusion as to where the entrance was at first. We thought it was the door pictured above since we could see a bunch of people dining inside through the windows. Turned out the main entrance was one door over and led to a strange hallway of sorts with two rooms at either end.
At one end was the smoking section, which apparently was where the party was at. There was a bar...and all the people. We had to stick our head in just to find someone to seat us. On the other hand, the nonsmoking dining room at the opposite end was completely deserted:
It took a little while for a server to remember us and come take our order, but we didn't mind. With the whole room to ourselves, we were in no rush.
First came the bread (0.60€ per person):
It came in handy with our dip sampler (4.80€):
The sampler included smoked eggplant spread, feta cheese and chili spread, and tzatziki. The eggplant was easily the family favorite. Just the perfect blend of smokiness and savoriness.
Our server recommended the sauteed pork bites in white sauce with figs and plums (7€):
Those figs tho! So sweet! I could've eaten that sauce alone with rice.
We also ordered the veal in sweet red sauce (7€) with fries (extra 1.50€):
Yet another plate of saucy goodness.
We added on the eggplant with manouri cheese and tomato sauce (6.20€) as a nod to vegetables:
It was my least favorite dish, but that was because of the cheese. I wasn't aware that manouri is made from sheep milk. If I had known, I would've never ordered it. Bleh. I'm just not a fan of stinky cheeses. Sorry, eggplant dish. It's not you, it's me.
To Trikyklo is as authentic a neighborhood spot as it gets. Located a bit outside of the city center, you won't find a lot of tourists here. Everything is delicious and very affordable. Service is a bit slower in the non-smoking room, but it's still friendly and attentive. Most of To Trikyklo's menu comes with a small portion option, which allows for more of a tapas-like experience if that's what you're in the mood for. We got full portions all the way around and the three dishes plus the appetizer was more than enough for the four of us.
Definitely stop by To Trikyklo if you're in the neighborhood, but don't feel like you have to go out of your way to try it out.
