Oakland: Off the Grid
For CT's birthday, she invited a bunch of people to Off the Grid at the Oakland Museum. Every Friday night from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, it's a party at the Oakland Museum. Not only is admission half off, there's music and dancing and Off the Grid food trucks:
VN and I got there early. With everyone else running late, we couldn't wait any longer to eat.
Divide and conquer was the strategy of the night. I beelined for Southern Comfort Kitchen:
I got the SoCo 50/50 with Cajun fries ($10), which was half fried catfish and half fried shrimp:
Meanwhile, VN set off for Senor Sisig:
She brought back the senor sisig burrito with pork:
With our spoils in hand, we met back at one of the standing tables in the middle of the street and split everything in half.
In the end, we were most impressed by Southern Comfort Kitchen. The fried shrimp was surprisingly plump and the catfish was nice and juicy. The burrito, on the other hand, was a bit of a letdown. When did Senor Sisig burritos get so skinny?:
Definitely not worth $9.75. Even if the Adobo garlic rice was quite yummy.
Over the years, food trucks have lost their allure for me. Overpriced, small portion sizes...basically more hype than it's worth. However, Southern Comfort Kitchen isn't bad at all. I wouldn't mind going back there if I ever find myself at Off the Grid again.
