Los Angeles: Guisados DTLA

My sister's scholarship award dinner was Sunday night.  We spent the morning at Newport Beach, munching on jalapeno ham and cheese croissants and sipping green Thai tea from Seaside Bakery.  Then it was back to headquarters so that my sister could get herself presentable.

This involved a pair of Spanx and some new heels my sister had to buy because she forgot her shoes at home (of course she remembered them when we were already halfway to Irvine).  And make up, courtesy of CK.  I walked in on CK sitting at my sister's feet, solemnly contemplating my sister's eyebrows.  In total silence.

It's a serious business, eyebrows.

Since CK and I weren't about to pay $80 per guest to join my sister at her dinner, we dropped her off at the venue in City of Industry in the evening, then trotted on over to Los Angeles for some snacking.

We walked around Grand Central Market, but both Eggslut and the bakery CK was interested in were closed.  Unwilling to give up our amazing parking space, we decided to take a walk instead.  Our walk led us to Guisados:

The place was pretty empty when we arrived, but quickly filled up once we got in line:

We placed our order, then sat down to wait with our agua frescas.  At the recommendation of the staff, we got the cantaloupe and the lemon ($2.25 for a small):

The lemon was nice and tart, while the cantaloupe was deliciously melon-y.

Since this was just supposed to be a snack, we got the sampler which consisted of six mini tacos ($7.50):

I don't remember which one was which.  Actually, we didn't know which one was which even while we were eating them.  We had to guess as we nibbled each one.  The sampler included steak picado, bistek en salsa roja, tinga de pollo, mole poblano, chicarron, and cochinita pibil.  (A full sized taco would have been $2.95 each.)  Everything was yummy, however the most memorable thing was the chicharron, which wasn't fried as we expected, but came stewed and chewy.

Because we have never been able to do snacking right, we also got a fish taco ($3.25) and an elote tamale (available only Friday-Sunday):

The taco was loaded and basically required unhinging our jaws to take a bite.  The tamale was subtly sweet, but got a little boring a few bites in.  At least for me.  CK enjoyed it.

If you like thick tortillas and stewed meats, Guisados is the place for you.  The tacos were flavorful and not absurdly expensive, despite its downtown location and trendy vibe.  I could see it as a great place to grab lunch during the work week.

After our "snack," we meandered over to Bottega Louie for some macarons, which we enjoyed sitting outside the Walt Disney Music Hall.

Every good snack deserves dessert.
