South Bay: Kula Revolving Sushi Bar

Everyone knows the best way to offset a vigorous hike is to stuff your face.  That's just a fact of life.  So of course T, CV, and I hit up Kula Revolving Sushi Bar after hiking at Sanborn County Park one weekend back in August.

Well, that's not quite true.  T and CV actually went to put our names down at Kula via the nifty tablet mounted outside the restaurant.  Meanwhile, I stood in line at Meet Fresh around the corner.  By the time we finished our Meet Fresh, our number was just about up at Kula:

Even though it was a bit too late for lunch yet still too early for dinner, the restaurant was packed:

There are two ways to get your sushi on at Kula.  You can either pluck them off the conveyor belt as they pass by or you can order directly on the tablet and watch your plate zip down the second level belt to a stop at your table:

Unless specially marked, each dish costs $2.50.

Now prepare yourself for an onslaught of photos with little text.  For three people, we did quite some damage.  (Keep in mind the photos do not include the seconds we got of some nigiri.)

We got squid nigiri:

Seared salmon with mayo:

Garlic ponzu salmon:

Spanish mackerel:

Salmon:

Hokkaido scallop:

Spicy salmon hand roll:

Conch:

Salmon maki:

Sunomono (pickled veggies with seafood):

Miso soup:

Unagi:

Sweet shrimp (way better than the regular old shrimp):

And my favorite discovery of the day, tuna yukhoe:

And salmon yukhoe:

Dude.  That egg yolk tho.

Kula also offers hot dishes like ramen, donburi, and tempura, which cost around $5 each.  We obviously stuck with the sushi.

There were a couple dessert options, but we went for the warabimochi:

To calculate your bill, you slide your empty plates into this slot on your table:

A server then comes by to add on all the non-$2.50 dishes.

For every 15 plates, you get a little gift from the capsule toy vending machine.  A cartoon plays on the tablet and then a little ball rolls out:

Ours turned out to be super cute stickers:

Which we then proceeded to forget at the restaurant.

Goddammit.

It's quite easy to rack up an impressive bill at Kula.  Everything looks so delicious on the conveyor belt and oh look, you're almost at 15 plates, so you might as well try a bit harder and get the capsule toy.  And oops, you're somehow up to 20...should you just go for 30 and get another toy?

If you have self control or just money to burn, Kula is the place to go.  It's a fun dining experience and not only that, the quality of the food is surprisingly good.

...And Meet Fresh is just around the corner.
