Los Angeles: Bhan Kanom Thai
As per our tradition, the first stop on our SoCal trip was Jitlada. We were especially excited to introduce CK to the magic that is Jitlada because we knew she would enjoy it. It did not disappoint.
After lunch, we decided to explore nearby Thai town on foot and look for dessert. Our search brought us to Bhan Kanom Thai:
More than a dessert store, Bhan Kanom Thai is Thai snack heaven:
If sweets aren't your thing, you can always buy some Thai potato chips or seaweed snacks:
The fridges contain even more Thai delights:
You can even order hot desserts such as khanom krok (coconut pudding cakes) and khanom buang (crepes) and fried bananas:
We were pretty full from Jitlada, so we just picked up some snacks to gift to our hosts (and for CK to take home to Chicago). However, I couldn't bring myself to leave without getting a couple things for later.
I was curious about the pangchi (6 for $4):
These little pan fried cakes are made with coconut, taro, and corn. It was the corn that got me. We waited a bit too long to eat them though. By the time we finally got around to it later that night (after spring rolls at Brodard and dessert at Meet Fresh), the cakes were cold and no longer crispy on the outside. I'll need to try them again, but fresh next time.
The grilled sticky rice with taro ($1.50), on the other hand, was still delicious cold:
It took a big bite to get to the taro though:
Bhan Kanom Thai is a wonderland. It's definitely a place that you can go again and again and still find something new and interesting. We had a blast just oohing and aahing as we inspected shelf after shelf. There was so much that I wanted to try and so much that reminded me of my previous trips to Thailand.
I wonder if there's a similar place in NorCal...either that or I'm overdue for another Southeast Asia vacation.
