South Bay: Famous Lao Papaya
The interior was small, but brightly lit and packed with people:
Lao Papaya has a pretty simple menu and we basically ordered almost everything off of it. We got the nam khao or cripy rice salad ($11.95):
The deep fried rice came with cured pork, roasted peanuts, dried chili, and lettuce.
We also ordered the larb gai ($11.95) because I. Love. Larb:
The ground chicken was seasoned with dried chili power, rice powder, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, shallots, lime juice, and fish sauce. Talk about fragrant!
The khaw mee ($11.95) was rice noodles stir fried in a sweet soy sauce and topped with eggs, green onions, cilantro, and bean sprouts:
The papaya salad ($9.95) came in either mild, medium or spicy. I was the weakest link of the group, but because my friends love me, we got the mild:
It came with a side of cabbage and fried pork rinds.
We were really curious about the kao poon ($11.95) or curry noodle:
The coconut red curry noodle soup came loaded with vermicelli noodles, chicken, pork blood, and chicken feet.
For the rice fiends, we added on sticky rice ($2.50), which came in these individually wrapped packages:
And as if that wasn't enough, we also added on some sausages ($3.50 each):
We got two spicy and one mild...the mild being for me. Because as I said many times before, I'm weak.
The sausages actually ended up being the revelation of the meal. They were perfectly seasoned with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, garlic, green onions, and chili. Savory, slightly sweet, and just a touch spicy, they were firm and juicy with just the right amount of fattiness. I loved their sausages. More than their larb even, which is crazy for me.
For a quick, casual meal with good food (sausages!), definitely check out Famous Lao Papaya!
