San Diego: Pop Pie Co

So...Jiejie was a bit traumatized by the sea kayaking.  Though if anyone should've been traumatized, it should've been me.  Not only did our kayak flip right as we were coming back to shore, halfway through the tour, unbeknownst to me, Jiejie would just randomly stop paddling.

Leaving me to paddle and wonder in frustration why we WEREN'T MOVING FORWARD.

Anyway, to "heal her heart" as she put it, we took Jiejie to a cat cafe where she was able to cuddle kitties to her heart's content.  (To heal mine, we went to get octopus tacos at Mariscos El Pulpo first.)

After her heart was sufficiently healed, we discussed what to do about dinner.  We originally tossed around the idea of getting Phil's BBQ, but we were still pretty stuffed from all the octopus tacos, so we decided to skip dinner altogether and go straight for dessert.

My friend CV had recommended this ice cream shop and...hold up!  Was that a pie shop right next door?:

Why choose between pie and ice cream when you can have both?

Pop Pie Co was super hipster and pretty darn popular:

Even though we were supposed to be there for dessert, we saw the savory pies in the display cabinet and somehow ended up getting one:

The green hog and cheese pie ($8.50) was loaded with pork shoulder braised in a blend of tomatillo, roasted pasilla, jalapeno chiles, and jack cheese:

The crust was buttery and flaky while the filling was moist and tangy and so, so flavorful.  Basically everything you could want in a savory pie.

And because we did say that we wanted dessert, we also got a slice of salted caramel apple crumple ($6.50):

I'm not usually a fan of cooked fruit, but this was apple pie to the next level with its oat crumble top and salted caramel sauce.

There were so many other pies that sounded super yummy.  If we'd had more stomach space, we definitely would've ordered more.
