South Bay: Must Be Thai
CV and T wanted to check out Must Be Thai, so CK, Abby and I met them there after work one night:
We'd called ahead to put our name down while we were still on the way, so we didn't need to wait all that long before we were seated:
Must Be Thai offers dishes from all across Thailand. From the Northeast section of the menu, we got the pok pok phu or papaya salad with salted black crab, green bean, and tomatoes ($9.90):
Also from the Northeast was the larb ($11.90), which is my go-to whenever I eat Thai:
Maybe because they call it a salad, but it's made with minced meat (in this case pork) and is the most refreshing tangy mix that goes perfectly with rice. That's my kind of salad.
The big surprise of the night also came from the Northeast. The phad fuqthong ($10.90) was just an extra dish that we tagged on:
None of us expected the kabocha squash stir fried with egg, carrot, mushrooms, and garlic to become such a favorite among the group. The squash was slightly sweet and savory and we immediately wished we'd ordered two.
From the Bangkok menu, we got the pad prik moo krob or roasted pork belly with pepper, peppercorn, Thai eggplant, and basil ($14.90):
It was pretty good, but it didn't wow us.
Neither did the bamee moodaeng hang ($13.50), also hailing from Bangkok:
The egg noodles with BBQ pork, fish balls, fishcakes, bean sprouts, and Chinese broccoli was just kind of...there.
There was a lot of different kinds of rice to choose from. We went with the butterfly pea flower ($3) and the ginger and garlic ($3):
I expected super fragrant rice, but the flavors were rather subtle. Paired with the much more flavorful dishes, whether or not the rice was seasoned was pretty irrelevant. All the rice cost the same though, so it didn't hurt to mix it up a bit.
At the end of the meal, the five of us were all in agreement. Must Be Thai is good, but kind of over priced. The decor is fun and the bowls are cute, but I would rather have zero wall art, ugly bowls... and bigger portion sizes.
Sorry. Just keeping it real.
