New Orleans: Willie Mae's Scotch House
Anyone who really loves fried chicken has heard of Willie Mae's in New Orleans. Known to have the best fried chicken in the country, when Willie Mae's was damaged after Hurricane Katrina, the community came together to rebuild it.
We knew there would be a long wait, so we made sure to get there right before it opened. Apparently a lot of people also planned ahead that way:
Luckily, we still managed to get in with the first shift of diners. We did, however, have to be taken into a back room:
Since we were about to have the best fried chicken in all of the nation, it seemed only fitting to break my water-only-at-restaurants-because-I'm-cheap habit and order a glass of sweetened ice tea ($2.50):
We started with some cornbread muffins ($0.75 each):
We got two orders of fried chicken for three people. Each plate ($15) came with three pieces of chicken (white or dark) and one side. We went with dark because we're Asian and for our first plate, we asked for macaroni and cheese as our side:
Here's a shot of our second plate of chicken:
That crispy skin. That juicy flesh. All that savory goodness. Ugh.
We got fried okra for our second side:
And because we'd heard good things about it, we tacked on a side of butter beans ($7.50):
Ohmygawd. Butter beans. Who knew? Willie Mae did.
So was it worth the hype? Was it the best fried chicken in the country? I can't say that I've tried all the fried chicken in all 50 states, but I will say that it's certainly the best damn fried chicken I've ever had.
Even better than Popeyes.
...
Alright, alright. Joke. It was a joke. (Though Popeyes is quite delicious.)
In all seriousness, at my age, there aren't many things I would be willing to wait in line for. For Willie Mae's, I would.
...But I would still try to avoid that by arriving before they open. Plan ahead, people. Plan ahead.
