New Orleans: Gumbo Shop

Taking the recommendation of a Lyft driver, we gave Gumbo Shop a try for lunch on our last full day in New Orleans:

The restaurant was very spacious, with high ceilings and large windows:

The complimentary bread looked like a potato, but was quite helpful when it came to sopping up our gumbo:

There were two types of gumbo offered.  There was the seafood okra gumbo ($9.50):

The thick soup was made with okra, onion, bell peppers, celery, a bit of tomato, shrimp, and crab.

The second gumbo option was the chicken andouille ($9.50):

This one included chicken, Andouille, and okra.  Of the two, we preferred the chicken as the seafood gumbo was a tad too fishy for us.

To make sure we really tried everything New Orleans is famous for, we added on a side order of crawfish etouffee ($7.99):

I can see gumbo being a comfort food.  (Saucy rice is a weakness of mine.)  However, Gumbo Shop didn't really blow us away.  We left feeling a bit let down as well as a bit thirsty (so salty!)

We floundered a bit when it came to deciding what we wanted to do the rest of the day.  Agreeing that air conditioning was key, we ultimately settled on the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium.  My sister asked whether there would be any spiders, to which CK snottily replied, "Spiders are not insects."

...

She really should have known that insectarium curators wouldn't care about that distinction.

My sister, who is terrified not just of spiders, but anything that even remotely resembles a spider, spent the entire afternoon tearfully shuffling her way through exhibit after exhibit.  We offered to leave multiple times, but she refused.  I ended up scouting out each room for her in advance to let her know which sections to avoid.

I didn't mind.  I found the whole thing hilarious.

Especially when CK almost gave my sister heart failure by picking a table to sit at that had a built-in tarantula exhibit.
