New Orleans: Williams Plum Street Snowballs

I don't know if I've mentioned how hot it was in New Orleans yet.  I have?  Well, it's worth repeating.

It was H-O-T.

We took the St. Charles streetcar from the Garden District to Audubon Park because we probably would've expired in the heat if we'd tried to walk it instead.  After strolling around the park a bit (more like scuttling from shady area to shady area), we called a Lyft to Williams Plum Street Snowballs.

The line was understandably massive:

The interior was essentially a counter manned by an efficient line of teenagers.  One filled the containers with ice.  A batch asked the handful of customers that fit inside the doors what flavors they wanted and located the appropriate syrups.  Yet another rang up the bill.  We barely had enough time to peruse the menu before we were in and out with snowball in hand.

My sister and I each got our own snowballs.  A small pail allows you to choose two flavors from the gigantic list of options.  I went with the pink lemonade and grapefruit while my sister got the blue raspberry:

We both opted to get condensed milk on our snowballs because we never say no to condensed milk.  The total cost for the two was $6.20 (condensed milk costs extra).

I'm usually not a fan of shaved ice that isn't snow ice, but once in while I find a place like Williams Plum Street Snowballs that has ice fine enough to suit my preferences.  Did the flavors taste artificial?  Yes, some more than others.  Did the ice melt and leak into the plastic bag?  Yes, but you're provided with a straw.  When it's over 90 degrees outside and the humidity is kicking your ass, a brightly colored snowball is exactly what you need.

Just make sure to bring cash.  It also wouldn't hurt to check the flavor menu on Yelp while standing in line so that you're prepared by the time you enter the door.

After finishing our snowballs, we headed over to Jacques Imo's for dinner only to find that it was closed for Memorial Day.  We toyed with the idea of eating somewhere else, but ultimately realized that we weren't actually hungry.

Something about hot days just shrivels up your appetite.  A cold watermelon would've been nice though.
