Greece: To Steki Tou Ilia

As the sky darkened and I led my family gradually away from more populated streets toward an unlit park, my mother started getting nervous.  Oh, mother.  Ye of little faith.  We go where the food is, even if we have to walk through eerily quiet neighborhoods.

Because if you persevere, you'll reach gems like To Steki Tou Ilia:

Not much to look at from the outside, but the inside was a completely different story:

By no means fancy, To Steki Tou Ilia was warm and inviting, especially with the amazing smells emanating from the kitchen in the back.

Once the butcher paper was spread over our table, we knew things were about to get serious.

As with most Greek restaurants, bread cost extra and we didn't really order it.  It just showed up at our table.  (The prices listed on the menu at To Steki Tou Ilia turned out to be slightly different from the prices on the final receipt, so I'm going to go by what was on the receipt.)  At To Steki Tou Ilia, bread cost 0.70€ per person:

It was lightly toasted, which paired perfectly with the uber thick and creamy tzatziki (3.50€):

We knew we wanted fries (3.50€) because, well, why not?:

Freshly fried, piping hot, and oh-so-salty.

The shining star of To Steki Tou Ilia is their lamb chops (30€ per kilo, we only ordered half):

Literally slips off the bone.  Seriously finger lickin' good.

The most interesting thing, however, was the fried lamb entrails (26€ per kilo, here's half):

That's right.  Entrails.  Everything was chopped up, mixed up, and fried to oblivion.  The fun part was trying to figure out whether we picked up a piece of heart or a piece of liver.  Toward the end though, everything just tasted like liver.

Love, love, love To Steki Tou Ilia.  It's all about that casual feel, almost like eating at your Greek grandmother's house.

...If you have a Greek grandmother.  Which I don't.  But you know what I mean.

Halfway through the meal, my father asked for a glass of white wine.  When we were ready for the bill, we noticed that the wine hadn't been included.  We pointed this out to the owner (he must have been the owner...he certainly wasn't a simple server), but he just laughed and waved it off.

Because that's the type of place To Steki Tou Ilia is.
