Greece: Koustenis ‎

In retrospect, a hike up 900-some steps to a castle probably wasn't the best immediate post-lunch activity to tackle:

We made it though.  And just in time too.  We didn't realize that Palamidi Fortress closed at 3:00pm.  We huffed and puffed up the steps and got to the ticket counter with about 15 minutes to spare.  Even though we couldn't really take our time to explore, we still managed to get our photos in before we were herded out along with everyone else.

As we descended down the hill, we had to deliver the devastating news of Palamidi being closed to all the tourists still trudging their way up.  To think that could have been us if we'd lingered over lunch just 15 minutes more...

Instead of sticking around Nafplio for dinner, we decided to catch an earlier bus back to Athens.  After buying our tickets, we still had enough time to stop by Koustenis to treat ourselves to some ice cream:

We certainly earned it.

Two bowls with two scoops each set us back 5€:

In one, we got lemon and yogurt with mango.  In the other, pistachio and kataifi.  Three out of four flavors are pretty self-explanatory, so I'll just skip right over to the kataifi.  Kataifi is a baklava-like dessert made with chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and shredded phyllo dough.  Super interesting, but my favorite was the lemon by far.  I'm a sucker for the tart and refreshing.

Best ice cream we've ever had?  Not so much.  But if you've just climbed 900 steps up and 900 steps down?  It's pretty damn good.
