Taiwan: Hashi Sushi

In her quest to feed us enough Japanese food to tide us through to our next trip to Taiwan, Jiejie brought the bunch of us to Hashi Sushi:

The restaurant was narrow, with not that much seating:

We were lucky to get a table big enough for the six of us.

We let Jiejie do the ordering since she was the boss.  As she ordered, she kept reminding us how expensive Japanese food is in the States and how we should eat as much as we can while we can get it so cheap.

The meal started simply enough with some edamame:

To "open our appetite" as they say in Chinese.

Then came the miso soup, one with fish (45 NT / $1.46) and one with crab (65 NT / $2.11):

It escalated quickly after that.  Prepare yourself for a parade of seafood photos and my sorry attempts to identify them.

Each nigiri order came with two, so we asked for three orders of just about everything.  There was herring with roe (50 NT / $1.63 per order) and flatfish (80 NT / $2.60):

To change it up a bit, there were clams (100 NT / $3.25 for three):

But then it was back to nigiri with salmon belly (80 NT) and scallop (100 NT):

Then came squid (100 NT) and some kind of fish that I do not know the English name for (80 NT):

Crab paste (70 NT / $2.28) was interesting and uni (200 NT / $6.25) was delicious:

A few of us wanted ikura or salmon roe (100 NT):

Whereas just one of us really wanted unagi (100 NT):

As if that weren't enough, we got a large mixed sashimi platter (400 NT / $13):

As well as this beautiful shrimp nigiri (230 NT / $7.48):

We loved the flatfish so much that we ordered another round:

It just melted in our mouths like magic.  Buttery, buttery magic.

We could have stopped there, but we wanted to try one more kind of scallop (90 NT / $2.93):

Everything at Hashi Sushi was freshly made and damn good.  Ordering nigiri is kind of dangerous because you want one of everything and easily forget that you're paying per order.  Luckily, the prices at Hashi Sushi aren't bad at all.  With the exception of some more pricey items (like the uni and the shrimp), everything was more than reasonable.

I could definitely see myself going back the next time I visit Taiwan.  Especially since it's so close to Jiejie's house.  If I'm not careful, I might be there every other day.

...Which might not be a bad thing.
