New York: Joe's Steam Rice Roll
The second motivation behind our impromptu trip to New York in March was this:
Joe's Steam Rice Roll. Yet another example of how Instagram actually works. We saw it on Insta, we wanted it, and we made it happen:
You can build your own rice roll at Joe's. First, you pick what protein you want. Options include beef, pork, BBQ pork, curry fish ball, and what we went with, shrimp ($6 for a large). From there, you pick three veggies. We decided on corn, scallion, and cilantro. We also added an egg for $1.
Everything is made fresh to order. From across the counter, you watch as the magic happens. The steamer drawer is pulled out, the batter poured in, and the ingredients spread evenly on top. The steamer drawer then goes back in and some seconds later, presto! Your rice roll is ready.
Joe's also serves Chinese pancakes and Chinese crepes, but we really couldn't see past the rice roll. Paired with soy sauce and that peanut sauce? Perfection.
