San Francisco: Five Happiness

While I was house-sitting in Oakland, it was much easier to slip across the Bay to visit my sister in San Francisco.  After meeting her at her church one Sunday, we were faced with the age-old question: what should we eat for lunch?

We walked around a bit and came across Five Happiness:

The menu in the window seemed decent enough, so we went in.

The restaurant was pretty empty, but the tables that were filled were filled by Asian people, which gave us hope:

We were handed a menu to mark our order on:

It was completely in Chinese, which was fine with us...and flattering.  There's nothing worse than being Chinese, speaking Chinese to the waitstaff, and then being handed an English menu when you know there's a Chinese one.  That's when you know you need to work on your Chinese.

Since it was just the two of us, we decided to exercise some self-control for once and keep it simple.  We got the zhajiangmian ($8.50):

With knife-cut noodles of course.

We also got the pan-fried buns ($5.95):

Both were exactly what we hoped for.  Decent.  No crazy attempts to be creative, just basic, comforting Chinese food.

According to the menu, Five Happiness offers mainly Taiwanese dishes with some Shanghainese ones thrown in the mix.  Despite its fancy chairs and tablecloths, Five Happiness has a casual, welcoming feel.  Our server was super friendly, chatting and joking with us throughout our meal.  The food was good, the prices were great...we really had nothing to complain about.
