Alameda: Ole's Waffle Shop

The main reason why I invited my sister to visit me in Oakland was so that we could take advantage of the half price admissions at the Oakland Museum on Friday night and see the Dorothea Lange exhibit.  The original plan was to explore the museum after I got off work, check out the food trucks at Off the Grid, and then hit up PieTisserie for some dessert.

Well, that didn't happen.

We did go to the museum.  There was just so much to see that we ended up spending more time than expected there.  By the time we finished, PieTisserie was closed.  We did walk around Off the Grid, which was parked right outside the museum, but didn't really see anything that interested us.

In the end, we stuck to the tried and true and had dinner at Shandong Restaurant in Chinatown.  So instead of a new post on PieTisserie or Off the Grid, let's fast forward to breakfast on Saturday, when we crossed over to Alameda and got in line at Ole's Waffle Shop:

The line was a bit intimidating, but it went fairly quickly.

Ole's Waffle Shop had a real old-fashioned diner feel, from its quirky decor to the old-timers asking for their "usuals":

My sister and I split a Texas omelette ($11.25):

Cheese and onions on the inside, chili up top.  The very definition of comfort food.  The omelette came with toast and a choice of toast hash browns or grits.  We asked for hash browns extra hard and upgraded our toast to a biscuit for an additional $0.30:

To go with our biscuit, we added a side of gravy ($4.25):

I wasn't really into the biscuit.  (It was a bit too bread-y for me.)  The gravy was also just alright.

To balance out all the savory, we ordered a stack of three pancakes ($6.45):

The pancakes were super fluffy, but so fluffy that they just crumbled apart on the fork.  They were a bit of a hot mess.  But a buttery one, which I'm okay with.

All in all, I thought Ole's Waffle Shop was very cute and homey.  Food is decent, service is quick, and prices are reasonable.  Definitely a place to bring the family and to keep going until the kids are grown and you're old and gray.
