Costa Rica: La Fonda 506

Since we didn't rent a car in Costa Rica, we relied on tours to get us around to the big tourist attractions in Arenal.  We had a full day tour booked through Canoa Adventures.

The day started at the Mistico Hanging Bridges Park, where we had a much more fruitful animal sighting excursion than when we hiked the Monteverde Cloud Forest on our own.  Next stop was La Fortuna Waterfall.  Abby and I were not at all interested in getting wet, so we took our pictures and then gradually climbed the 500 or so steps back up.

Lunch at La Fonda 506 was included in the tour:

Alcohol cost extra, but strawberry pineapple juice was included:

We didn't get to see a menu, but our tour guide read us a list of options.  I didn't expect the chicken rice to look like fried rice:

Meanwhile, Abby got the shrimp rice:

For dessert, there was a choice between flan:

And cheesecake:

As we typically do, we got one of each and split them.

We had zero complaints about the food, neither about the flavor nor the portion size.  It was a damn good meal for being part of a tour.  We had braced ourselves for mediocre fare at best, but La Fonda 506 far surpassed our expectations.

What also exceeded our expectations was Abby's reaction to the shrimp.  On our way back from hiking Arenal Volcano National Park that evening, Abby looked really worse for wear.  At one of the hotel drop off stops, she had to rush to the bathroom.  Our hotel was the last stop.  Abby looked so bad that our tour guide kept asking whether he should take her to the hospital.  She declined the offer and stumbled into our hotel room.  After popping Zyrtec, she crawled into bed to sleep it off.

Luckily, she survived and the hives on her chest and limbs faded by the next morning.

We'd always known that Abby is allergic to certain types of prawn, but this was by far the worst allergic reaction she's had to date.

Has Abby stopped eating shrimp since then?  Of course not.  She just carries an EpiPen with her now.
