Greece: Pelican Kipos

With the majority of my researched restaurants thrown out the window (due to them being closed for the winter season), we were really thankful to our Airbnb hostess for recommending Pelican Kipos, located just a hop, skip, and jump away from our apartment:

It was way too cold to enjoy the outdoor garden seating, but the wall of windows made sitting inside feel just as if we were dining al fresco:

We were forewarned that tap water is not potable in Santorini, so it didn't come as a surprise when we had to pay for bottled:

We didn't mind.  Spending 1.70€ on water wasn't exactly going to break the bank.  It did, however, make us space out our sips a bit.

Santorini is known for its fava, so we definitely wanted to try it.  Pelican Kipos offers fava both "married" and "unmarried".  Apparently "married" fava comes with lightly fried onion in olive oil and capers, while "unmarried" means the lonely fava only comes with fresh onion and capers.  We took the married route (8€):

Fava dip is kind of like hummus, yet not exactly.  I would say that it's a bit smoother and creamier than hummus.  We didn't think to get bread to go with it, so we ended up kind of spooning it directly into our mouths.  Which we didn't hate at all.

White eggplant is also a thing in Santorini, so we ordered the tourlou (9€):

The white eggplant came roasted in a ceramic pot with tomato sauce, garlic, and feta.

Does white garlic taste different from its boring old purple cousin?  Not that I could taste.  Eggplant is eggplant and eggplant is awesome.

Our server was very pleased when we said we wanted the roasted lamb (16.50€):

So were we when it arrived.  It was just so meaty and savory.  Even the veggies that came with it were delicious.  It didn't look like a lot, but there was plenty of meat in that little ceramic pot.

Before we could place our order, our server ran off to get a tray full of fresh fish, just caught that day according to him.  The one that caught my father's eye were these little guys (17€):

I can't tell you what they were, but they were certainly fried to perfection.  Fresh fish really does taste different.  There's a sweetness that's just oh-so-lovely.  We killed that plate.

At the end of the meal, our server brought us some complimentary panna cotta:

Yummy and free?  Be still my heart.

We might not have had many options to compare Pelican Kipos to, but I think it would still be a solid choice during peak season.  The food is great, prices are fair, service is attentive, and the atmosphere is relaxing.  What's not to like?

If you're planning a trip to Santorini in the off season though, rest assured that you won't starve.  Pelican Kipos will be open and there for you.
