Orange County: King Chang

We really wanted to hit up Ahgassi Gopchang back when we were in SoCal in October, but they were  closed due to the pandemic.  (According to Yelp, it looks like they're going to reopen March 1, 2021!)  Luckily, there was another option for intestines on the recommendation list my friend GY gave me.

Recently renamed King Chang, the restaurant was still called Hak San when we went:

The interior was quite spacious.  Given how there were less people dining inside than out, we felt comfortable getting a table indoors:

Due to the pandemic, banchan came served in pre-portioned trays:

The onions and salads still came in serving bowl though:

We ordered the medium intestine combo ($53.99) for the four of us.  The combo included corn cheese:

A steamed egg:

And a choice of kimchi stew or doenjang stew (we obviously went with kimchi):

For the intestine themselves, we got to choose three cuts.  The options were small intestine, large intestine, abomasum, and mountain chain.  We went with the first three:

The intestine grill also included potatoes, onions, mushrooms, and aged kimchi.  When the grill arrived at the table, the intestine were already fully cooked and cut into bite size pieces.  My favorite was the large intestine, which was fatty and sweet...but the potato slices fried in intestine fat came in a close second.  Very close.

Intestine is one of those things that you either find disgusting or love with a fiery passion.  As you probably deducted, I fall under the fiery passion category.  Ahgassi is still the best place in California to get grilled intestine in my opinion, but King Chang isn't a bad alternative.  Service is efficient and the food is yums.

Counting down the days until we can travel freely and dine indoors again!
