Japan: Harajuku Gyoza Lou
Only to discover the exact opposite when we arrived:
While the restaurant was certainly busy, we were seated immediately:
Apparently Wednesdays at 1:00 pm is the best time to go.
We started light with cucumbers in miso sauce (¥250 / $2.39):
Followed by boiled bean sprouts with meat sauce (¥250):
Gyoza Lou offers two types of dumplings. You can get them steamed or you can get them pan fried. Both styles come in original or garlic with chives.
We got the steamed dumplings with garlic and chives (¥290 / $2.77):
And the original gyoza (¥290):
Coming from Taiwan, Jiejie couldn't understand why we would want to go all the way to Japan to eat dumplings. I had to explain to her that my love for dumplings transcends all. I love dumplings in all forms from all cultures. I love dumplings so much that I am basically a dumpling.
The dumplings and gyoza from Gyoza Lou didn't feel heavy at all. I could have eaten a dozen by myself and still felt okay about my life decisions.
What I loved most about Harajuku Gyoza Lou was how freakin' cheap it is. Yes, dining in Japan can be absurdly expensive. But what's great about Japan is how there are still places were you can eat for dirt cheap. Like Gyoza Lou.
If you're visiting Tokyo on a budget, definitely stop by. And even if you're lucky enough that money isn't an issue, go anyway because the dumplings are pretty darn good.
