South Bay: Tea Villa

Abby and I were invited to our first ever Zipkick foodie event back in the summer.  It being our first time, we didn't know what to expect when we arrived at Tea Villa:

For the event, Tea Villa brought out various appetizers for the Zipkickers to photograph:

There was popcorn chicken ($5.85), mozarella sticks ($5.95 for 10), chicken wings ($7.35 for 6), curly fries ($4.55), and saucy french fries ($4.75).

They also gave us villa chicken ($5.85), which was chicken katsu drizzled with teriyaki sauce and Japanese mayo:

Everything looked really good and I'm sure they would have tasted fine too...if we hadn't spent 30 minutes taking pictures.  By the time the photo shoot was done and we were allowed to touch the plates, everything was cold.

The excitement level in the room noticeably increased when the lobster garlic noodles ($12.80) came out:

Especially when we saw the size of the monster claw:

Where did they find such a mutant lobster?!

Abby and I actually made our getaway while people were still taking pictures of the lobster.  Before we left, we ordered a few drinks to go.  For the Zipkick event, all drinks were 50% off:

From the galaxy fusion menu, I got the moonlight flash (regularly $4.65), which was lychee soda with mint.  Abby ordered the bean milk ($4.95), which consisted of milk with brown sugar, red bean, and boba.  For our mother, we got a taro potted plant milk tea ($4.75).

It took me a while to realize that the flashing light I kept seeing was coming from inside the moonlight flash and not a reflection of the lighting inside Tea Villa.  When we got home, we fished out the little LED light:

How extra is that?

The Zipkick event itself was pretty eyeopening.  The two of us walked in with just our cell phones, while others came prepared with lighting equipment and DSLRs.  We quickly learned that we didn't take this whole food Instagram thing nearly as seriously as other people.  (Hence probably why we have yet to get any sponsorships.  Sigh.)  But everyone we met was super friendly and it was nice to be around people who didn't mind us taking multiple photos of each dish and who were just as particular about positioning and re-positioning each plate to our satisfaction.

Our experience at Tea Villa was obviously skewed as we were there for an event.  Even so, I could see myself going back.  I doubt the lobster would be that gigantic for non-events, but all in all, the drinks were good, the food was decent, and the prices reasonable.

Can't wait for the next Zipkick event!
