New Mexico: Caliche's
We ended up at Caliche's:
The chili cheese dog remained our favorite at the end of the day.
We got distracted by the sundaes real quick. The most interesting sounding one was the green chile sundae ($6.29):
The vanilla frozen custard was topped with a green hatch chile jam of sorts and your choice of nuts. The popular pairing appeared to be the salted pecans. It was really sweet with just a touch of spiciness. It was good, but the sweetness got a bit much after a few bites.
Because we couldn't just get one sundae, we also ordered the fudge brownie bliss ($5.99):
Again with a vanilla frozen custard base, though this time blended with brownie bits and topped with hot fudge. Also very, very sweet, but also very, very delicious.
To help neutralize all the sweetness, we took advantage of the two dogs and a drink combo, which if I remember correctly was around $7. We got to pick any two hot dogs and any fountain drink, lemonade, or ice tea:
We ended up getting the chili cheese dog and the zia dog along with a lemonade. The chili cheese dog is pretty self-explanatory. The zia dog came with nacho cheese, hatch green chile, and bacon bits.
We enjoy the dogs so much that we actually went back again the next day to order the same combo deal. The chili cheese dog was our favorite, so we definitely wanted that again. To try something new, we got the super dog, which was topped with spicy relish and Texas chili:
There may not be a lot of options in Alamogordo, but Caliche's is a good one. The deals are great, the food is good, and the service is fast. There's really nothing to complain about.
Except for the lack of tables. Eating off of a bench just isn't the same as having a table. You can order a lot more when you have a table, right?
