Mexico: Tacos Fenix

It's criminal to go to Ensenada, the birthplace of the fish taco, without getting a fish taco.  It's simply not done.

So after La Guerrerense, we took a walk both to digest all the ceviche we'd had and also to get to our next food destination, Tacos Fenix:

Located in a less touristy part of Ensenada, Tacos Fenix only had two things on their menu: fish tacos and shrimp tacos.  As that was precisely what we wanted, we weren't mad at that.

My sister and I split a fish taco (18 pesos or $1) and a shrimp taco (21 pesos or around $1.15):

The tacos came naked with just a tortilla and a fried shrimp or a piece of fried fish.  They didn't look too impressive until we dressed them as we wished with all the accoutrements left on the side of the stand:

I kept waffling between whether I liked the fish or the shrimp taco more.  In the end, the shrimp edged out the fish by just a smidge.  Fried to perfection, both were freakin' delicious.  The batter was thin and crisp and not greasy at all.  It was also seasoned with just the right amount of saltiness to pop through the freshness of the cabbage, pico de gallo, and chipotle sauce.  The fish and shrimp were so light it almost felt like eating a salad in taco form.

Now that's the kind of salad I can get behind.

Ensenada and Tacos Fenix did not disappoint.  That was easily the best fish taco I've ever had.  And so cheap too!  If it wasn't for our plan to go wine tasting afterward, I could've stayed there and wolfed down another two or three (after digesting a bit more, maybe).
