Korea: Yeonnam Seo Sikdang

What I love about Korea is how there are restaurants that specialize in one thing and that's all they serve.  Jiejie took us to her favorite galbi restaurant, Yeonnam Seo:

She warned us beforehand that it was a standing barbecue, which was exactly what we found when we arrived:

If you're expecting panchan, look elsewhere.  Besides meat, chili peppers, dipping sauce, and drinks, if you want anything else to go with your galbi, you'll have to bring it yourself.  It's completely BYOK...bring your own kimchi.  Which we did see other people bring.

We, on the other hand, walked in empty-handed and ready to take on the galbi:

A single portion of galbi at Yeonnam Seo is 150g and costs ₩15,000 ($12.50).  While it's not a written rule, every party is expected to order one portion per person.  We had no issue with that.  Our problem was whether we should order more.

When our galbi was brought to us, we watched and drooled as the lady started the grilling for us:

After everything was laid out to her satisfaction, we were left to take it from there.  Conversation dwindled until the there was only the sounds of meat sizzling, the hums of pleasure with each bite...and the howling of the wind.

With over 60 years of history, Yeonname Seo is apparently a kind of institution in Seoul.  From what I hear, there's usually quite a long wait if you wish to dine there.  We went on a typhoon day and while there were still quite a few people there, we were able to slip right up to a grill immediately.

The wind was so bad that the wooden sliding doors were in danger of being ripped off.  After unsuccessfully trying to secure them, the staff decided to just keep the doors wide open.  Standing around a barrel-shaped grill eating galbi while trying to keep our shirts from blowing up and dodging flying napkins really made for the most memorable, perfect experience.
