South Bay: Jackie's Place

Before the world turned sideways, we finally made it out to Jackie's Place:

We'd been wanting to go for a very long time, but the thought of having to venture downtown kept us from actually making it happen.

What?  Am I the only one who hates driving and parking downtown?

Anyway, five of us rolled into Jackie's Place around 5:00 pm on a Saturday evening.  We had painstakingly planned out what we wanted to order, but when we approached the counter, we were told that most of the BBQ items had already been sold out.

GASP.

No ribs.  No brisket.  No pulled pork.  No BBQ chicken.

We ended up ordering everything that was still available.  Like the hot links ($15):

And the oxtails with rice and gravy ($23), only served on the weekends:

The fried chicken wings ($17):

And two orders of the fried fish ($17):

All of the entrees came with cornbread:

As well as two sides each.  We basically went through and ordered everything still available off of the sides menu as well.  We tried the green beans, the coleslaw, mac and cheese, the collard greens, the candied yams, the fried corn, and the chili beans (not pictured).

We also managed to score the LAST glass of sweet tea ($2):

The very last one.

Even though we didn't get to try all the dishes that we wanted to, we were blown away by how delicious everything was.  And by everything, I do mean EVERYTHING.  Even the sides!

When I go to restaurants, I don't expect every side to be amazing.  There's typically a couple stand outs, but then everything else is kind of just there.  But at Jackie's, every single side we had was legitimately delicious.  The collard greens had smoked turkey in it, which made it smokey and meaty and yummy.  The candied yams were sweet without being toothache-inducing.  Even the green beans were well seasoned.

What sorcery is this, Jackie?

Unfortunately, there was a fire at Jackie's Place recently and as a result, they are temporarily closed.  According to Yelp, they are scheduled to re-open on September 7, 2020.  I really hope that's true because I have to go back to try everything else on the menu.

You should too.  Just make sure to get there early before things sell out.  And if you want BBQ, don't go on Sundays because they don't serve BBQ then.
