Japan: Udon Shin

Snack at Gyoza Lou was followed by a late lunch at Maisen Tonkatsu, more shopping, and then (really expensive) cake time at a department store.  We tried to stop by Koffee Mameya in-between, but was intimidated after spending a couple minutes inside and fled with our tails between our legs.

We ultimately ended our day with dinner at Udon Shin.  There was a bit of a line, but perhaps because of the rainy weather, it wasn't all that bad:

Once inside, we could understand why the wait was so long.  The interior was very narrow with very few seating:

Definitely not a place to go with a large group.

While we were still waiting in line, a staff person came out with menus and took our orders.  The food came out pretty quickly after we were seated at the counter.  Talk about efficiency!

We started off with an assorted tempura platter (¥1350 / $12.51):

It included two shrimps and various veggies like eggplant, pumpkin, and green bean.

Udon Shin's menu offers both hot and cold options.  We got the cold udon with beef, grated daikon, and soft-boiled egg (¥1200 / $11.12):

There was a soy sauce based sauce to pour in before mixing.  The egg yolk and the daikon combined with the soy sauce made for this very creamy yet refreshing end result.

From the hot selection, we ordered the udon with raw egg, cod roe, and nori (¥1100 / $10.19):

We were too curious to pass on the carbonara udon (¥1200):

It came with a raw egg, parmesan cheese, butter, pepper, and get this, BACON tempura.

I'll admit to being a sucker for thicker noodles, but even the most hardened noodle hater cannot find fault with Udon Shin.  The noodles are so fresh and chewy and just utterly delightful.  The portion sizes are just enough to fill you, yet leave you wanting more.  And the prices are super reasonable to boot!

Some places aren't worth the wait, but Udon Shin very much is.  There were so many other udon variations on the menu that sounded super interesting, such as the one with yuzu pepper jelly and the other with hot soy sauce, butter, pepper, and egg.  In hindsight, we should've skipped the tempura and just ordered another udon.  Or two.

Dammit.  I need to go back.
