Orange County: Albatros Mexican Food
I'd heard from a friend that carne asada fries are better in SoCal than in the Bay, so I definitely had to put it to the test while I was down there. T just had carne asada fries for the first time at Taqueria Las Vegas a few days before our SoCal trip, so it was still fresh in her memory. Combined with my sister's and my own obsessive love for carne asada fries, the three of us made up the perfect carne asada judging panel.
The friends that we were staying with brought us to their go-to place in the Irvine area for carne asada fries, Albatros:
Soon after we walked in people started coming in one after another:
No plates and silverware here. Only take-out boxes and plastic utensils.
We ordered two boxes to split between the three of us:
We should've ordered one.
Anyway, here's the breakdown of our analysis:
- Fries -
About the same as Taqueria Las Vegas in NorCal
- Carne Asada -
Larger cuts of meat
- Toppings -
Same array as in NorCal (cheese, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream), but unlike in NorCal, the toppings are in dollops rather than evenly spread to cover the fries
Final verdict? While we appreciated the larger pieces of carne asada at Albatros, we preferred how Taqueria Las Vegas distributes its toppings. But Albatros does have one thing over Taqueria Las Vegas. Albatros is open 24 hours a day...which means carne asada whenever you want, all day any day!
Think about it. Perpetual bliss.
