Tri-City: Kyain Kyain

Even though AG has only been in the Bay for around three years, he's constantly introducing me to restaurants that I have never heard of.  He's always on the hunt for the next hole in the wall to check out.  When he told T and me that he was going to get Burmese food in Fremont, we had no idea where he was talking about.

We tagged along for the ride and was surprised to find a little Burmese restaurant tucked into the corner of a nondescript strip mall:

AG had done all the research and placed an order beforehand over the phone.  For five people, he ordered up quite a storm.

We started off with the tender pork ear salad ($7.99):

Now this is the kind of salad I can get behind.  The pork ear was chewy and delightful amidst the crunch of the cucumber and cabbag.

It's virtually impossible to have Burmese food without having tea leaf salad ($10.99):

We loved how funky the fermented tea leaf was.  The tomatoes added a burst of sweetness and the peanuts a bit of crunch.

The staff recommended paratha with lamb curry ($14.99):

Beef and chicken curries were also options, but why get those when you can have lamb?

AG and I share a fondness for pork intestine with spices ($7.99):

He's Thai and I'm Chinese, but apparently this kind of intestine is the taste of childhood for both of us.

There was the roasted garlic noodles ($8.99):

The flat egg noodle came loaded with chicken, crispy garlic, and green onion.

Another classic Burmese dish was the fish noodle soup ($7.99):

It was a chowder style soup with rice noodles, catfish, fried yellow beans, and cilantro:

To cover all the noodle bases, AG also ordered the curry coconut chicken noodle soup ($7.99):

Which was yellow noodle with a thick curry soup, topped with cilantro, lemon, fried rice chips, and onion:

Everyone who knows me knows that I'm in no shape or form a salad person.  But if there's anything that can convert me, it's Kyain Kyain.  From the pork ear salad to the tea leaf salad, all the salads were wonderful.

Actually, everything we had from Kyain Kyain was pretty darn solid.  The prices were pretty darn affordable too.  You can easily get a meal for less than $10 and that's hard to find these days.

Kyain Kyain, I'm sorry for not knowing about your existence until now.  But now that I'm in the know, I'll definitely be back!
