San Diego: Underbelly

RW and I were pretty stuffed after Crack Shack, but when RW's other friend joined us and wanted food, we ended up on a late night ramen run to Underbelly:

I really didn't need a bowl of ramen, but of course that didn't stop me from ordering the belly of the beast ($12):

This bowl came with tonkatsu broth, oxtail dumplings, smoked brisket, hoisin glazed beef short rib, and a soft boiled egg.  The oxtail dumplings were the most intriguing to me, but in the end they were just sort of...mushy.

Even though I was full walking in, I still managed to finish my ramen and do my ancestors proud.  I think I would've appreciated it more though, had I gone in with an empty stomach.  As it was, I was more focused on shoveling the noodles into my mouth than on how they tasted.

Guess this means I'll need to go back.

The three of us spent the entire meal debating whether to go to the San Diego Zoo the next day before our flight home.  After our week helping out at the detention center, RW and I really wanted to just go to a happy place and relax.  But tickets were over $50.  We ultimately decided to shelve the decision for the next morning.

The first thing RW said to me Sunday morning?  "I want to go to the zooooooo."

So we did and it was glorious.  In dark days like these, when it feels like you're under siege from every direction (especially true in the immigration context under this administration), spending a day looking at cute animals is a much needed reprieve.
