Three Rivers: Pupusas La Sabrosa
Abby, UK, and T split two flights of beers:
Turns out they didn't like any of the beers, so let's not waste any time talking about them. Instead, let's focus on the hidden gem of Three Rivers. Tucked in the corner of Three Rivers Brewing Co's outdoor seating area is Pupusas La Sabrosa:
Make a note of what it looks like because you're definitely going to want to eat there if you're in town.
We were starving, so we went ham on the pupusas. We started with eight ($3 each):
I'll spare you from my attempts to photograph the innards of each pupusa and just tell you what we ordered. We strolled in like a bawse and casually ordered one of each pupusa. We got a chicharron, a chicharron with cheese, a revuelta (mixed pork with cheese and beans), a beans and cheese, a cheese, a zucchini and cheese, a jalapeno and cheese, and a cheese with lorocco flower.
We could tell immediately upon the first bite that the pupusas were made from scratch. So fresh! So hot! (Very, very hot. Please be careful when eating.) All the fillings were savory and delicious. The curtido (think of it as a Salvadoran slaw) added the perfect tang and crunch.
We must have been crazy because we went back to order a carne asada quesadilla:
And two tacos (carne asada and al pastor):
As well as a repeat order of four of our favorite pupusas:
These included the bean and cheese, the chicharron with cheese, the chicharron, and the revuelta. Basically all the protein ones.
We had a chance to chat with the owner when he brought out the food. Turns out that he is originally from San Jose, hence the phone number with the 408 area code. He'd moved down to the Three Rivers area because it was getting too expensive to live in the Bay. We commiserated with him and then jokingly told him that his pupusas were much better than the beer from the brewery.
To which he solemnly responded that we weren't the first to say so.
