South Bay: Fluff'd by Koja Kitchen
It was supposed to be a lazy Saturday. Meant for sleeping in and staying in PJs all day. Except Abby shook me awake before 8:00, forced me to put on real pants, and then dragged me to Koja Kitchen...all because she saw an Insta picture of their souffle pancakes:
Even though we live just a couple streets down from Koja Kitchen, it took an Instagram photo and a determined sister to finally bring me inside:
Fluff'd is Koja's breakfast menu, available only on the weekend. There are three souffle pancake options: mixed berries, matcha mascarpone, and Tokyo banana. We went with the mixed berries ($11.95):
It came topped with mixed berries (quelle surprise), mixed berry sauce, whipped cream, powdered sugar, and maple butter syrup.
Because I have more of a salty tooth than a sweet one, I dipped into the savory side of the menu. I got the breakfast musubi ($3.50):
It came with avocado, bacon, tamago, spam, and unagi sauce.
We also got the sumo plate ($6.50), which was essentially a combo platter with smoked bacon, a kurobuta sausage, a potato croquette, and furikake scrambled eggs:
So was it worth the early morning wake up call and the putting on of real pants?
That would be a resounding NO.
Instagram is tricky. Everything looks perfect and delicious in photos, but in real life? Not necessarily the case.
Case in point, Fluff'd. The souffle pancakes were disappointingly flat. Not even remotely close to the fluffy, jiggly, and cloud-like pancakes of Asia. Just meh. Also meh was everything else. It almost felt like dining in a cafeteria with its disposable plates and mediocre food. Where else do eggs come in that shape and texture? We had to drown it in ketchup to make it palatable.
The moral of this story is to always look beyond Instagram photos. Pictures are nice, but do a bit of homework and look at reviews too before FORCING YOUR SISTER OUT OF BED ON A SATURDAY MORNING.
Yea. I'm not bitter.
