Malaysia: Line Clear
Line Clear is supposed to have the best nasi kandar in Penang, so of course we had to go. Located in an alley, it's easy to miss if not for the giant whale sign:
Why the whale, Line Clear?
All the reviews online warned about a long wait. I don't know if we went at an off hour, but there was virtually no line when we arrived.
Nasi kandar is basically rice with a variety of curries and sides. At Line Clear, you can pick and choose what you want:
More than a bit overwhelming if you're a newbie like we were. We basically told the elderly Indian man to pick for us. He had a stern face, but was incredibly patient with us.
After collecting our plate, we headed deeper into the alley to snag a table:
CK and I shared one plate and thank goodness we did because it turned out to be just enough food for the two of us:
Neither of us knew exactly what the elderly Indian man selected for us, but everything was delicious. There was chicken curry and okra and cabbage...yum. Instead of white rice, we opted for nasi biryani. So fragrant. We scraped the plate clean.
We also had the best pulled tea ever:
CK noticed some other people eating papadum. She was curious because she'd never had any before. When she asked one of the Line Clear staff what they were, he brought us 2 to try free:
How's that for service? He was super sweet and kept coming to check on us.
Line Clear is open 24 hours a day, so there's really no excuse not to check it out if you're ever in Penang. (They're apparently closed every other Tuesday and for prayers Friday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:00 pm so keep that in mind.)
Be warned though, you pay according to what you choose to top your plate. I can't give you exact prices because I have no idea what we ordered and how much each cost. We just paid at the end and enjoyed.
Oh man, how we enjoyed.
