Costa Rica: El Comalito Tortilleria

The morning before we left Arenal, Abby and I stopped by El Comalito Tortilleria for breakfast:

Located right outside of a grocery store, you can easily miss El Comalito if you're not paying attention.

As per our vacation habits, we started off with some juice.  Abby ordered tamarind juice while I got cas:

We split an empanada platano maduro (₡1500 or around $2.25):

This sweet empanada was made with mashed plantains and stuffed with a mild cheese:

To get a taste of their regular empanadas, we got one with frijoles (₡1000 or around $1.50):

The bean filling within the crispy shell was lava hot:

We probably should have stopped there, but since we were on vacation, we added on the trio de tortillas (₡3000 or around $4.50):

One tortilla was topped with chicken, one with steak, and one with cheese.

Everything was freshly made and hot, hot, HOT.  The most interesting dish was the empanada platano maduro.  It was soft and delicious, though I probably wouldn't have been able to finish one on my own.

While it wasn't my favorite meal in Costa Rica, it was certainly very budget friendly and the staff were very kind.  Definitely stop by if you're trying to save some money on your travels or if you're looking for a quick snack/meal.
