Springdale: Oscar's Cafe

It's been a while since I've posted, yeah?  Thanks to COVID, we just haven't been eating at a lot of new places.  But I'm back with an update!

Earlier this month, Abby was originally supposed to go to Korea with UK, but that wasn't happening for obvious reasons.  Instead, they changed gears and planned a little road trip to Zion and Joshua Tree.  CK and I tagged along because we were getting stir crazy and needed to get out of our everyday routine.

The drive from San Jose to Zion National Park took around 11 hours.  We stopped for a late lunch at El Gordo's in Las Vegas before arriving at our motel in Springdale, UT in the evening.  The next morning, we got up bright and early to catch our 7:00 am shuttle into the park.

The very first hike of our trip was the Narrows.  It was everything I dreamed it would be...with the addition of toxic bloom in the river, freezing water temps, and extremely sore hip flexors.  Despite the pain, it was an amazing hike.  In the words of CK, it was a unique experience.

We managed to squeeze in the Canyon Overlook hike in the afternoon and by evening, we were starving.  We'd packed cup noodles for the trip, but that just wasn't going to cut it.  A quick Yelp search led us to Oscar's Cafe:

The social distancing situation there was a bit too nonexistent for our peace of mind, so we ordered to go and unpacked everything on our motel room floor.

Abby ordered the mucho nachos ($13):

The blue corn chips were topped with black beans, salsa, corn, jalapenos, cheese, and guacamole.

UK got the murder burger ($16):

The murder burger was a half-pound garlic burger topped with pepper jack and cheddar cheese, bacon, onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, and ketchup:

CK and I split the avocado chip burger ($16):

Check out this cross section with the melted provolone, cheddar, and pepper jack cheese, avocado, tomato, pickle, onion, lettuce, chipotle mayo, and corn chips:

All burgers came with a side of fries and a dill pickle.  Even though we didn't see onion rings on the menu, CK took a leap of faith and asked if it would be possible to substitute our fries for onion rings.  Apparently it was.

I'm so glad CK asked because those onion rings turned out to be my favorite part of the entire meal.  So crunchy!  No stringy onions!  Perfectly seasoned so no condiment necessary!

My mouth is watering now just thinking about those rings.

Oscar's Cafe is a great option for a filling meal to re-fuel you for another day of hiking.  Prices are reasonable for a tourist-filled town and portion sizes are decent.  The burgers are good, though they're a bit on the bland side.  The onion rings, however, make a trip to Oscar's Cafe entirely worth it.
